The CCU (Control Cabinet Unit) is the central component of KUKA robot control cabinets, responsible for signal processing, bus communication, and system coordination. Key functions include:
Hardware Connectivity & Signal Distribution
In the KUKA KR C4 control cabinet, the X44 interface of the CCU connects to Beckhoff coupling modules (e.g., EK1100) via EtherCAT, enabling communication with input modules (EL1809) and output modules (EL2809) for digital signal acquisition and output control.
The CCU provides stable 24V power distribution to downstream modules, ensuring reliable operation of sensors and loads.
Software Configuration & Address Mapping
Using WorkVisual software, the CCU supports EtherCAT bus configuration and I/O address mapping. For example, input signals from EL1809 modules can be mapped to predefined addresses in the robot control system for seamless integration.

Servo Motors & Reducers
Direct-Drive Motors + Harmonic Reducers: Collaborative robots (e.g., the iiwa series) use direct-drive motors coupled with harmonic reducers to minimize transmission errors and enhance control accuracy. Each joint integrates motor-side encoders and joint-side position sensors for closed-loop control.
Vector Cast Iron Motors: Models like the Inovance VDM1 series (11–355 kW) feature wide temperature (-40–70°C) and voltage (9–48 VDC) tolerance, making them ideal for harsh environments. High torque output supports heavy-duty applications.
High-Precision Feedback Systems
Servo motors employ absolute encoders (e.g., 24-bit single-turn encoders) and Drive-CLiQ interfaces for real-time data synchronization, achieving nanometer-level positioning and speed control.
In applications like chamfering, KUKA robots integrate high-speed electric spindles (e.g., Sycotec 4040DC-S) with 60,000 RPM capability, relying on servo drives’ rapid response for complex trajectory control.
